Condition / Grading Guide = for VINYL RECORDS;

Grades follow the album titles in parentheses;  The first grade is for the vinyl, the second is for the jacket. Sometimes, there are brief notes immediately after the grade.  Feel free to e-mail if you need specific info about any of these LPs (in-depth condition description, track listings, label info...anything);  I will get back to you ASAP.

Still Sealed (SS) records;

We DO use this GRADE when we are 99% SURE the Shrink Wrap appears to be Authentic Factory Shrink Wrap. [Not Re-Sealed in Modern Times]

Still Sealed Covers we still assign a GRADE, as most have some handling damage.

Still Sealed VINYL is ASSUMED to be MINT;

Mint (MT);  Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed.(More on still sealed under "Other Considerations"). This grade that should be used sparingly as a grade If at all.  (Many Dealers use the Grade for STILL SEALED Items);    [We NEVER use this Grade, EXCEPT on FACTORY SEALED Records]

NM/MT; (Near Mint to Mint);  [We NEVER use this Grade, EXCEPT on FACTORY SEALED Records]

Near Mint (NM);   (Many Dealers use the Grade MINT or MINT MINUS);   A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly), that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP Cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest price listed in most price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the opinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest book value & is rare.

EX/NM (or EX+); (Excellent to Near Mint) (Many Dealers use the Grade VG+++);

EXCELLENT (EX);  (Many Dealers use the Grade VG+ or VG++);  Generally worth 50-65% of the Near Mint value. An Excellent record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Excellent record highly acceptable.  >>>> Vinyl: May have scuff marks and signs of some wear but will still play almost perfectly throughout, with only "barely detectable" crackles or pops. A slight noise at the begining is allowable, but the remainder must be nearly flawless. Definitely no scratches or gouges that a touch with a dry finger can feel.

Very Good (VG);   Generally worth 30-50% of Near Mint value. Many of the defects found in a Excellent record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise might be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that might slightly affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.  This is the AVERAGE condition for a still DECENT "Used" Record.

G/VG (or G+); (Good to Very Good);

Good (G);  Generally worth 15-25% of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad;  A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and should play through without skipping. But it will likely have some noticeable surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. It is a common item, you'll probably find another copy in better shape eventually, you may want to pass it up. But, if it's something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it, then keep looking to upgrade.  This is generally a WELL USED copy.

FA/G (or FA+); (Fair to Good);  By OUR standards; a copy in FA/G, should be able to play at LEAST 80% of all tracks without Skipping (Usually 90% to 100% will Play Thru). THUS, if a RARE item, you will at least get a FEW songs from the Record. NOTE that tracks should be expected to have STATIC & NOISE.  Expect it to have MULTIPLE Heavy Scuffs & scratches, and to have unattractive Vinyl.

Fair (FA);  Generally worth 5-15% of the Near Mint price. The record MIGHT have one or more of these Flaws;  Warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on 1-3 seams and marred by wear and writing. The LP cover barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, crinkled, and written upon. Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this condition should be bought, except as a FILLER, until a better copy comes along.  By OUR standards; a copy in FAIR, should be able to play at LEAST 60% of all tracks without  Skipping. THUS, if a RARE item, you will at least get a FEW songs from the Record. NOTE that tracks should be expected

to have STATIC & NOISE.  Expect it to be badly scratched & very unattractive.

PR/FA (or PR+); (Poor to Fair);

Poor (PR);  Generally worth 2-5% of the Near Mint price. The record will have several of these flaws; Cracked, badly warped, and MOST or ALL Tracks won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve Cover is BADLY damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and writing, might have pieces out, heavy Tape repairs, etc. The LP cover barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, crinkled, and written upon. Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this condition should be bought;  It is not recommended to try to play this item. It is for display, filler, or Completionist purposes only, until a better copy can be found.
